Frequently Asked Questions

  • Integrative medicine offers a comprehensive approach to health care, including conventional medicine combined with in-depth nutrition, botanicals, supplements, mind-body medicine, and other evidence-based alternative and complimentary practices. In-depth medical history and advanced diagnostic tests help us identify the underlying causes of illness. The doctor then devises a personalized treatment plan in collaboration with other professionals if necessary.

  • Longevity medicine, also known as anti-aging medicine or preventive medicine, is a medical practice that focuses on promoting healthy aging and extending both the quantity and quality of life. It takes a proactive and holistic approach to healthcare, aiming to prevent age-related diseases, slow down the aging process, and optimize overall well-being.

Dr. Gibson combines traditional medicine with principles of integrative and longevity medicine following advancements in scientific research to develop personalized treatment plans and strategies tailored to each individual's unique needs. By optimizing nutrition, physical activity, stress management, hormone balance, and sleep patterns, longevity medicine aims to enhance overall health, vitality, and resilience, ultimately extending the healthy lifespan. Longevity medicine encourages people to take an active role in their own health, make informed decisions, and adopt healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Longevity medicine and primary care overlap, as they both offer medical services to advance health and well-being. However, there are several key differences:

    1. Focus:

-Primary care focuses on providing comprehensive healthcare services for individuals of all ages, addressing acute and chronic illnesses, and managing a wide range of health concerns. -Longevity medicine specifically emphasizes healthy aging, disease prevention, and optimizing overall well-being in order to extend both the quantity and quality of life.

    2. Preventive vs. Reactive:

Primary care often operates in a reactive manner, where healthcare providers primarily address health issues as they arise and provide treatments accordingly. Longevity medicine‌ takes a proactive and preventive approach. It aims to identify and address the underlying causes of age-related decline early on, before they manifest as diseases or health conditions. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle modifications, longevity medicine seeks to minimize the risk of developing age-related diseases and slow down the aging process.

    3. Holistic Approach:

Primary care typically addresses individual health concerns on a case-by-case basis, Longevity medicine takes a more holistic view of health. It considers the interconnectedness of various factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and hormonal balance, in determining overall health and aging. Longevity medicine practitioners often take a broader approach by addressing multiple aspects of an individual's health and well-being to optimize long-term outcomes.

    4. Personalization:

Longevity medicine places a strong emphasis on personalized medicine instead of focusing on population based medicine. It recognizes that each individual is unique and may have different genetic predispositions, health histories, lifestyles, and goals. Longevity medicine practitioners use advanced diagnostic tests, biomarker analysis, and genetic profiling to assess individual risks and develop tailored treatment plans. Primary care, while also considering individual characteristics, may have a more generalized approach due to the broader population it serves.

  • Dr. Gibson does not contract with insurance companies, including Medicare or Medicaid, which means our patients may be reimbursed on an out-of-network basis for most visits. Each insurance agency has different rules and we advise you check with your insurance carrier regarding reimbursement rules. Patients can, and many do, use their Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA) to pay for their medical services. Generally, when a doctor is contracted with an insurance company, the insurance carrier can dictate things that affect patient care. This may include how much time the doctor spends with the patient, what tests the doctor can order, and what services we can provide to you. Not so often, patients may feel rushed through an appointment or unable to get their questions answered, or feel frustrated with tests being not covered. Dr. Gibson does not have contracts with insurance, because she feels the best way to address patients' health concerns is to understand the root cause of their issues, which cannot be done in the limited amount of time insurance allows. The referrals to other providers (nutritionist, psychologist, physical therapist, specialty experts), lab work and imaging could be covered by your insurance. We advise you to check with your insurance carrier regarding reimbursement rules.

  • Due to the individualized requirements of the insurance provider, it is the patient’s responsibility to complete the process with their insurance provider.

  • Your first step to becoming a patient in our practice starts with completing the New Patient Application Form and schedule a 15-minute complimentary discovery call with Dr. Gibson to discuss our services, answer your questions to make sure we are the right fit in your health journey.

  • At your first appointment, we will assess your health history in extensive detail. The treatment plans are customized using multiple modalities including nutrition recommendations, supplements, medications, mind-body techniques, and exercise suggestions as examples. Please understand that this is an extensive visit, and the time spent will depend on the complexity of your health concerns.

  • Your labs tests will depend on the nature of your medical problems and previous results. Please make all efforts to bring your lab results and screening tests for the appointment. When provided, we will review your previous laboratory tests and imaging results and may order appropriate laboratory testing based on your symptoms. We do order additional longevity biomarkers, imaging or screenings as necessary. They may or may not be covered by your insurance and we advise you to check with your insurance carrier. We do provide you with the necessary billing codes and the order.

  • Many routine labs are reimbursed by insurance companies and can be performed at local drawing sites (Labcorp, Sonora Quest) Other specialty laboratory testing may not be reimbursable by your insurance company. Specialty lab tests may be ordered to give a more comprehensive picture of what is going on in the body. The tests will be determined on an individual basis.
